For centuries, women artists stood silently in the shadows, not allowed to study or make art, or doing so secretly. Those who broke through were viewed as exceptional, like Artemisia Gentileschi, a victim of rape who went on to paint women’s plights with majesty and power, or Sofonisba Anguissola, who had kings and queens as her subjects. This exhibition looks at the ways women artists shaped culture, commerce, and art from the 1400s through the 1800s. Works by Gentileschi, Rosalba Carriera, and Judith Leyster are included. —Elena Clavarino
