Ghosts of Canoe Lake: New Work by Marcel Dzama

Marcel Dzama, Ghost of Canoe Lake, 2023.

10365 Islington Ave, Kleinburg, ON L0J 1C0, Canada

Marcel Duchamp was a chess aficionado known for his intellectual rigor at the table, a conceptual prowess he also brought to his art. Duchamp happens to be Marcel Dzama’s idol. The young artist is also studying the works of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, a painting movement that dates back to the early–20th century. This group began the radical practice of landscape painting in Canada, where the wilderness was previously considered too “wild” and “untamed” to inspire “true art.” Dzama draws on his childhood memories of Manitoba and Saskatchewan for this exhibition, which features installation, paintings, and video. —Elena Clavarino
