Milton Avery’s star has been on a slow yet steady ascendance. I have always been fascinated by people with odd eyes. J.F.K. had a lazy eye, and I think Camila Cabello has one, too, but I’m not sure—she’s fine with or without one. Glasses are just as interesting to me. I started wearing them in my 50s, trying on different frames for new looks, like ties with different-colored shirts. I’ve often painted people, invented them, who have odd eyes, sometimes wearing glasses.
