Picasso, like Matisse, considered Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) “the father of us all.” Monet exclaimed, “He’s the greatest of us all.” They understood that without the pioneering master of Aix-en-Provence, Cubism—among other modernisms—would not have been born. Picasso even purchased land and a castle on a piece of Mont Sainte-Victoire, whose majestic peak—among Cézanne’s most iconic and liberating subjects—dominates the Provençal landscape that was Cézanne’s home and birthplace. Willie Tyler, depicted here in the early 70s with his dummy, Lester, was the most acclaimed Black ventriloquist ever, performing on tour with Motown acts of the 60s as well as in nightclubs and on television. Tyler, who celebrated his 82nd birthday last month, is the subject of an upcoming documentary about his life and career called Hello Dummy! (which was Lester’s regular greeting to Willie).
