In 1874, the first exhibition of Impressionist paintings was held at 35 Boulevard des Capucines, in the former studio of the photographer Gasper-Félix Tournachon. Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Paul Cézanne, and, of course, Claude Monet were among the exhibitors. The movement took its name from one of Monet’s plein air landscape paintings—a striking work called Impressionism, Sunrise. Drawn from the museum’s holdings, this exhibition celebrates 150 years since that first exhibition in Paris, and reflects on the revolutionary path these painters forged for modern art. —Elena Clavarino
