Light: Works from the Tate Collection

J. M. W. Turner, Sun Setting over a Lake, c. 1840.

July 12 – Oct 2, 2023
7 Chome-22-2 Roppongi, Minato City, Tokyo 106-8558, Japan

“Light is therefore color,” said J. M. W. Turner, the English painter known for turbulent seascapes aerated with bursts of brightness. Trailblazers such as the Impressionist painters (Claude Monet and László Moholy-Nagy) and Bauhaus photographers were lauded for their ability to harness the arresting beauty of light, a presence that Turner recognized as God. This mixed-media exhibition of works from the Tate Modern—featuring photography, sculpture, painting, and kinetic art—crosses time and space to examine the quality of luminosity embodied in the show’s 120 masterpieces. —Nyla Gilstrap
