What’s happening in

Tokyo

Walking around Tokyo, you’ll feel like it’s the largest city in the world—because it is. Japan’s buzzing capital combines extreme modernity with history and tradition. Endless cultural landmarks, clothing stores, museums, restaurants, and bars line the streets of the city, so be sure to plan your days ahead of time. We recommend trying the tonkatsu at Butagumi, sushi at Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan, and steak at Shima. Visit the Mori Art Museum for contemporary artwork and the Nezu Museum for pre-modern Asian pieces. As Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation makes clear, the nightlife in Tokyo is not to miss. Have a cocktail in the Ebison neighborhood at Bar Trench and listen to vinyl records at Bar Martha. Unsurprisingly, the city is not lacking in wonderful hotels—for a cool stay, try the Trunk Hotel; for ultimate luxury, stay at the Aman; and for something uniquely Japanese, opt for the Hoshinoya.
