Britta Marakatt-Laba was born in 1951 in Karesuando, Northern Sweden, to a Sámi family of reindeer herders. Her father, Johannes Marakatt, died when she was five, leaving his wife to raise their nine children. Life was tough, but Britta found solace in art. She studied textiles at the Art Industrial School, in Gothenburg, then moved to Norway for further education. In 2017, she presented Historjá, a 75-foot-long textile work that depicted the history of the Sáme people, at Documenta 14. The immense creation is now the centerpiece of this retrospective in Oslo. Other highlights include Marakatt-Laba’s early sketches and drawings, many of them never before exhibited. —Elena Clavarino
