Layer Away

Uniqlo Heattech

Air Mail staffers have a “secret weapon”: Uniqlo’s Heattech collection. Bio-warming, wicking fabric converts your body’s moisture into heat—don’t worry, you’ll remain entirely dry—and so these basics are ideally suited for everyday winter wear. But it’s the slim little turtleneck—particularly smart underneath a well-tailored jacket—that we love best. Not only does it retain toastiness, it holds its shape beautifully, unlike some “tissue” turtlenecks on the market, which quickly develop holes in well-worn spots. Black and white are all well and good, but the wine and navy shades add a little something extra. ($24.90, uniqlo.com)

Suit Up

The Stylish Ski Jacket

The very best parts of a ski holiday are the charming little chalet and the moments on the mountain’s summit or base. And if your skill set is solely suited to the après-ski portion of the day, we’ll never tell, provided you look the part. While Perfect Moment’s houndstooth jacket (inspired by the colors of the French flag) is entirely functional hors-piste—however you define it—it’s also tricked out with a thick turtleneck liner and gummed snow skirt, perfect on bunny hills and black diamonds. ($540, net-a-porter.com)

Invest

The Statement Sweater

Before you think less of us for recommending a sweater that’s roughly the price of two nights at the Little Nell, let us explain. At the advent of 2020, many are adopting Marie Kondo’s less-is-more mind-set—but how many basics does one really need? Jonathan Anderson’s magnificent intarsia sweater is as beautiful as a piece of china, but far more useful, guaranteeing a remarkable outfit. Inspired by the work of British ceramist William De Morgan, an important figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, Jonathan Anderson designed an oversize wool-and-mohair-blend beauty that is embroidered with an enchanting motif of trees and animals. Whether with a skirt for the office or dressed down with trousers for the weekend, the styling possibilities are both endless and thrilling. ($2,650; net-a-porter.com)

Quilted Gloves

Gloves are, somewhat ironically, nearly impossible to hold on to. (Your Air Mail style correspondent has been wearing half a pair for weeks.) But these quilted-chevron leather sets from Portolano deserve to be preciously guarded. Made from soft calfskin and lined with cashmere to add extra warmth, they’re also very flattering to the hand—we’re optimistic that you won’t be able to take your eyes off them. ($145, net-a-porter.com)

Adorn

Earrings with Attitude

After leaving the Rachel Comey boutique in Los Angeles, one might pause on Melrose Place to wonder, “Why haven’t I been buying more of her jewelry?” (The designer’s ready-to-wear silhouettes can be tricky.) Comey’s art teacher–cum–gallerist vibe superlatively manifests in the action-packed Miranda earring. A geometric acrylic crystal, a riot of metallic fringe—there’s so much happening here that putting them on constitutes “getting dressed.” They’d look lovely with an off-the-shoulder sundress and some K. Jacques sandals for a lunch at Jumby Bay Island. Another rum punch, please. ($215, rachelcomey.com)
