The Big World: Alternative Landscapes in the Modern Era

Virginia Berresford, The City, 1936.

1001 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139, USA

The words “landscape art” typically conjure a peaceful but perhaps boring vision of a field or lake. This exhibition, however, examines late–19th– and early–20th–century globalization and industrialization through a unique collection of landscape art, one that moves beyond the canvas to include decorative and sculptural mediums as well. Beginning with the traditional school of said field or lake, the evolution of the modern era is seen here as a transition from nature to cities. Warfare and its impact on the environment is also addressed, and shows that landscape art can serve up powerful political commentary. —Lucy Horowitz
