Speaking to Falling Seeds

Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, Untitled, 2023.

Until Aug 5, 2025
600 State Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90037, United States

“Stop Telling Women to Smile,” Tatyana Fazlalizadeh’s 2012 public art series, became a nationwide phenomenon for the way its portraits challenged gender-based street harassment. In her latest project, Fazlalizadeh uses portraiture to explore the experiences of Black Angelenos. The series, titled “Speaking to Falling Seeds,” uses conversations and photographs from the artist’s stay in Los Angeles to create a series of oil-paint portraits of Black, primarily female L.A. residents. Wheat-pasted to the walls of the California African American Museum, these works acknowledge Fazlalizadeh’s street-poster roots. —Paulina Prosnitz
