Photography in Days of Pandemic

June 1 – Nov 15, 2020
Asmalı Mescit, Meşrutiyet Cd. No:99, 34430 Beyoğlu/İstanbul, Turkey

“Art lifts man from his personal life into the universal life,” writes Leo Tolstoy in his 1897 book, What is Art? And it is the universal that weaves a single thread through the images of these 43 photographers, each invited by the Istanbul Modern to share their quarantine work. The photographs are wide-ranging, capturing everything from sheep on an empty country road (Emin Altan’s Species Solidarity, Lesbos, Greece, Istanbul, Turkey) to a crowd of people celebrating (Yusuf Dariyerli’s Untitled). But the underlying tone is that of mutual understanding. In many ways the coronavirus has synchronized our attitudes about the past, present, and future. —J.V.

While the museum itself reopens on June 16, this exhibition is available across the institution’s digital platforms.
