Last year The New York Times reported that Jews are leaving Germany at rates second only to the exodus seen during and after the Second World War. And while the majority of Germans support a “never again” stress on remembering, anti-Semitism increasingly drives right-wing political parties, crime in the streets, and bullying in schools. Reopening after a $50-million reconstruction, Frankfurt’s Jewish Museum, which celebrates Jewish art, culture, and history from the 19th century on, has put a strong focus on the present day. Located inside the historic Rothschild Palais, the museum also offers temporary exhibitions, including, until February, “The Female Side of God.” At the nearby Museum Judengasse, the foundation of 19 buildings in the city’s Jewish ghetto can be explored. —J.V.
