James Ward Presents: Seven Americans

Arthur Dove, Landscape, 1941.

14A Hay Hill, London W1J 8NZ, United Kingdom

Nearly 100 years ago, the gallerist and photographer Alfred Stieglitz opened a groundbreaking exhibition in New York City titled “Seven Americans.” Ringing in American Modernism and a new era of art, he showcased his own work with that of Arthur G. Dove, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Charles Demuth, Paul Strand, and Georgia O’Keeffe. James Ward, the director of JC Gallery, pays homage to Stieglitz with an exhibition of his own, also titled “Seven Americans.” Four of the artists are the same (Demuth, Dove, Marin, and Stieglitz), but Ward now brings Oscar Bluemner, Arthur B. Carles, and Joseph Stella into the mix. It’s the first time this group of artists have ever been shown together in Europe. —Clara Molot
