Henry Taylor: Nothing Change, Nothing Strange

Henry Taylor, Untitled, 2019.

Feb 17 – July 23, 2023
1214 Arch St, Philadelphia, PA 19107, United States

The Los Angeles-born artist Henry Taylor paints obsessively, bringing bright swaths of color to portraits of people and things such as cereal boxes, detergent, furniture. His work calls to mind the Harlem Renaissance painters Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden, but his energy is powerfully contemporary. Over the last two years, Taylor has been living in Philadelphia, working in residency at the Fabric Workshop and Museum. His focus here is found objects, which he’s used to create paintings and sculptures that reflect on Black life and on social issues such as homelessness and economic inequality. This show presents Taylor’s recent assemblages, tapestries, and textiles. —Elena Clavarino
