Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style

A Christian Dior Venus evening gown from 1957.

50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr, San Francisco, CA 94118, USA

San Francisco has always been known as an old-world city with a free spirit, and now, drawing from its fashion archives, the de Young is giving us a long view of the city’s 20th-century style. From rich holdings come designs by San Franciscan stars such as the Chinese-American Kaisik Wong, local contemporary tastemakers Sushan Foslien and Sherri McMullen, and Japanese and European designers from Junya Watanabe and Yohji Yamamoto to Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier. Look for global trends such as avant-garde asymmetry and the more recent explosion of street style. —Lucy Horowitz
