Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance

Donatello, Lamentation Over the Dead Christ, 1455–1460.

Feb 11 – June 11, 2023
Cromwell Rd, Knightsbridge, London SW7 2RL, UK

In the 15th century, the Florentine sculptor Donatello was called “the master of masters.” He sculpted a penitent Magdalene in wood, stoic saints in marble, and a lithe young David in bronze. In the first major Donatello exhibition in 40 years, the distinguished curator Francesco Caglioti displays pieces from the artist’s entire career, placing them alongside works by his Renaissance contemporaries—Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Raphael, Michelangelo. This exhibition is a joint collaboration between the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and the Musei del Bargello in Florence (where the show opened). The marble masterpiece David Victorious is in attendance. —Jensen Davis
