Dominican Yorks

Mi Nacimiento, by Reynaldo García Pantaleón.

Until June 30
613 W 155th St, New York, NY 10032, United States

Reynaldo García Pantaleón, Rider Ureña, and Chiqui Mendoza were all born in the Dominican Republic within a span of a decade—between 1964 and 1972—and they all ended up moving to New York. Although these three artists work across a variety of media, including drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture, and installation, they ask similar questions. How do Caribbean immigrants experience life on America’s East Coast? What happens to cultural customs? How do new communities take shape? This exhibition should provide some surprising answers. And its opening coincides with the beginning of Dominican Heritage Month. —Elena Clavarino
