Cactus

Bernard Boutet de Monvel, Basket makers in front of cacti, 1920.

Rue Yves St Laurent, Marrakech 40000, Morocco

While Central and South America are home to the vast majority of the world’s cacti—all 1,700 species are present except for one—Africa also possesses a significant number of species. The Jardin Majorelle, in Marrakech, is home to one of the planet’s largest cacti collections, with over 60 species. To celebrate this extraordinary diversity, Marc Jeanson, a botanist at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, has collaborated with Laurent Le Bon, president of the Centre Pompidou, on an exhibition that juxtaposes these prickly plants with works by contemporary artists—Martin Creed, David Hockney, and Lisa Ghotmeh among them. —Elena Clavarino
