Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli star in An Enemy of the People.

Until June 16
1633 Broadway (on 50th), New York, NY 10019, United States

In 1882, a year after Henrik Ibsen was labeled “immoral” and “degenerate” for his play Ghosts, which explored the subjects of incest and venereal disease, he published An Enemy of the People. The drama focuses on Thomas Stockmann, a doctor tasked with inspecting the drainage system of his town’s bathing complex, the backbone of its small economy. When he discovers the water is contaminated, his brother, the town’s mayor, attempts to silence him, then undermines his credibility. The town turns on the doctor. Jeremy Strong (Succession) stars in Amy Herzog’s much-anticipated adaptation, while Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) takes on the role of his brother. Sam Gold, Herzog’s husband, directs. —Jensen Davis
