Age of Content / (La)Horde with Le Ballet National de Marseille

Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer, and Arthur Harel of (La)Horde.

From its moniker, (La)Horde, you might expect the artistic collective that has directed the National Ballet of Marseille since 2019 to amount to more than a trio (a filmmaker, a visual artist, and a choreographer, all in their 30s). But “horde” is the perfect word to describe the atavistic, twitchy, and speedy mob that moves with a hive mind under stark white light through the threesome’s proliferation of stage works and accessory music videos. This is performance in a post-IRL, post-human domain, where dance maneuvers go viral without ever setting foot off social media and where the mesmerizing dancers are not only fearless but boneless too. Does the world that (La)Horde has built look fun? Who cares—it looks like the future of the real. The most recent work, Age of Content, tours France through June, with an earlier piece, Room With a View, marking the collective’s New York debut this month. —Apollinaire Scherr

(La)Horde will perform Age of Content at various venues throughout France into June of next year, making stops in Spain and Portugal along the way.
